ABOUT

~ Azam Ali ~

Responsible for every facet of her new album Phantoms from song writing, singing, programming, to production, Azam Ali pushes through the glass ceiling and enters the largely male dominated tech world to join in the ranks of other visionary female electronic musicians and producers who are shifting and shaping the landscape of electronic music.

The darkly alluring record is Azam’s first self-produced entirely English language album that melds Azam’s mystical musicality with gorgeously gloomy electro-pop, adding a whole new dimension to an unconventional artist who has always eluded categorization.

Phantoms is retro-futuristic album that draws inspiration from electronic and shoegazing music of the 80’s and 90’s of such groups as Massive Attack, Portishead and Cocteau Twins, combined with influences of moody film soundtracks that combine classical and electronic music. The result is a lush electronic album rife with intriguing layers of rugged beats, synths, live strings, grimy industrial-tinged textures and dirty ambience. This edginess is beautifully offset by Azam’s distinct emotive, sensually feminine vocals and her elegant instrumental production choices.

YAIMA is an old word meaning “that which water runs through,” a conduit for diverse musical languages. Their sound is rooted in the rich depth of tradition through biological beats, folkloric storytelling and mystical melodies. They reach towards our compelling, technological future by weaving live instrumentation and vocals over lush electronic layers, seamless soundscapes, and body-blooming bass.

Yaima is a confluence of musicians Pepper Proud, Masaru Higasa, and Jeff Kimes from the Cascadia region. When these kindred souls get together they achieve a new harmonic element. Having evolved out of the traditional model of what a “band” is thought to be, they deliver a well sculpted creative energy that engages the imagination and leaves people feeling inspired and awakened. Their audience feels as if they had just participated in a choose-your-own-adventure story within a musical experience.
